One of the West End's Most Intimate Historic Theatres

The Ambassadors Theatre has stood proudly in the heart of London’s Seven Dials since 1913. Located just steps from Covent Garden, this beautifully preserved venue offers an intimate and atmospheric setting for theatre-goers. With a capacity of approximately 400 seats, the Ambassadors is one of the smallest commercial theatres in the West End, creating a uniquely close connection between the audience and the performers on stage.

Early Years and Iconic Productions

Designed by architect W.G.R. Sprague, who was also responsible for the neighbouring St. Martin's Theatre, the Ambassadors Theatre opened on 5 June 1913 with a production of Pantaloon by W. Somerset Maugham. Its early programming reflected the diversity of London theatre at the time, mixing plays, musicals, and revues. Over the decades, it has hosted a number of notable productions, but none more iconic than Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, which premiered at the theatre in 1952.

The Mousetrap began its record-breaking run at the Ambassadors and remained there for more than 21 years before transferring next door to the St. Martin's Theatre in 1974. This association helped cement the Ambassadors' legacy in British theatrical history. The theatre has also seen performances by some of the UK’s most revered actors, including Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim in the original cast of The Mousetrap.

Not Just a Relic – A Contemporary Creative Hub

In the 1990s, the theatre was divided into two studio spaces and briefly renamed The New Ambassadors Theatre, catering to smaller-scale and experimental productions. However, a later refurbishment restored it to its original layout. It has since returned to prominence as a home for innovative theatre, including the internationally acclaimed physical theatre show Stomp, which ran from 2007 to 2018 and brought a whole new audience to the venue.

The Ambassadors Theatre retains many of its original Edwardian features. The auditorium is notable for its elegant curves, intimate sightlines, and lack of balcony—unusual for West End theatres of its era.
